Here’s what the vertebroplasty procedure involves and when it’s typically recommended.
What Is Vertebroplasty?
Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat spinal compression fractures. These fractures often happen in older adults with osteoporosis, but they can also result from cancer or trauma.
During the procedure, a special type of medical cement is injected into the fractured vertebra. This helps stabilize the bone, relieve pain, and restore some spinal strength.
The procedure is guided by imaging, such as fluoroscopy or CT, to make sure the cement is delivered to the right area. It’s usually done on an outpatient basis, and most patients can return home the same day. Some people start feeling relief almost immediately, while others notice improvement within a few days.
When Is Vertebroplasty Recommended?
Doctors may recommend vertebroplasty when someone has a painful vertebral compression fracture that hasn’t responded to rest, medication, or other nonsurgical treatments. You might experience sudden and sharp pain, especially after bending, lifting, or even sneezing. If the fracture is keeping you from walking, standing, or sleeping, vertebroplasty may be worth considering.
Your orthopedic team will likely confirm the diagnosis through imaging. At Bone & Joint Specialists, we have advanced MRI capabilities in-house to help identify the exact location and severity of the fracture.
Timing matters, as vertebroplasty tends to work best when performed relatively soon after the fracture occurs. When symptoms linger or worsen despite conservative care, acting quickly can make a difference in both pain relief and long-term spine stability.
